Day 1: Arrival in Mekele Upon your arrival in Mekele, the capital of the Tigray region in Ethiopia, you will be greeted by our tour representative who will assist you with the necessary arrangements. You will be transferred to your hotel for check-in and have the rest of the day at leisure to relax and acclimatize to the altitude.
Day 2: Mekele to Hamed Ela After breakfast, we will embark on a scenic drive towards the Danakil Depression. Our first destination is Hamed Ela, a small village located in the heart of the depression. Along the way, we will pass through the rugged landscapes of the Afar region, witnessing the dramatic changes in scenery. Upon arrival in Hamed Ela, we will set up camp and spend the night under the starry sky.
Day 3: Dallol and Lake Assale Today, we will explore the otherworldly landscapes of Dallol, known for its colorful hot springs, salt formations, and sulfur deposits. We will witness the vibrant hues of the mineral-rich pools and the unique geological formations that make this area truly remarkable. Afterward, we will visit Lake Assale, a vast salt lake where the Afar people extract salt in traditional ways. We will have the opportunity to interact with the locals and learn about their way of life. In the evening, we will return to Hamed Ela for another night of camping.
Day 4: Erta Ale Volcano One of the highlights of the Danakil Depression tour is the visit to the Erta Ale Volcano, one of the few active lava lakes in the world. We will start our trek to the volcano in the late afternoon, as the temperatures become more bearable. The hike takes approximately 3-4 hours, and once we reach the summit, we will be rewarded with a mesmerizing view of the bubbling lava lake. We will spend the night camping near the volcano, experiencing the raw power of nature.
Day 5: Return to Mekele After witnessing the sunrise over the Erta Ale Volcano, we will begin our descent and return to Hamed Ela. From there, we will drive back to Mekele, where our Danakil Depression tour concludes. You will have the rest of the day to relax and reflect on the incredible experiences you had during this unique adventure.
